Darkness Or Light

Posted by Pastor Nick

"This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all."--1 John 1:5

So is God light, or is He dark?

Many philosophers struggle with the idea of evil. It is hard to figure out how God could be completely good, and yet evil exist in this world. So man of them assume that God is both evil and good. Yet we don't find this in scripture. Look at 1 John 1:5, God is light, no darkness in Him at all. So how did evil come about?

What philosophers fail to remember is that as humans we have free choice. We can choose good or evil. We have the choice of what to do in our lives, what to wear, what to eat, when or where to sleep. This freedom of choice has been a gift from God since the very beginning. Maybe some of you see where I'm going with this.

Darkness did not originate with God, it originated with Lucifer or satan. Look up Revelation 12:7-9. It talks about a war in heaven and satan and the angels that were with him were cast out of heaven. God gave angels free choice as well, and satan was allowed to choose himself over God.

God is light, there is no darkness in Him. I believe that because of our free choice to choose God or not, shows that there is no darkness in Him. It is hard to see darkness in someone who does not force you to make a choice. God truly cares about each and every one of us. I hope that you can see that.

So is God light or is He dark? Definitely light. Just spend some time reading the Bible, looking at the Word, and you will see that there is no darkness in God. Everything He does is for the best for His people. He does not force people to make decisions, He gives them the choice and let's them make it. I thank God everyday for the life He has given me, and that He is full of light.

Ok, after a brief absence, I am back to offer my thoughts. :)

For God to be the ultimate force and power in the universe, he had to offer the chance to fall to his creations. He couldn't have kept evil from being a choice because then there would have been no choice. And once evil came about in the heart of Lucifer, he had to leave the choice open for humans, otherwise Satan could have come back at him for not truly offering them a choice.

Take the Garden of Eden and the Fall of Man. Notice that God doesn't pull Adam aside and tell him, "Ok, Adam, next week on Wednesday, about 3 in the afternoon there's something that is going to happen in the orchard. Here's what I want you to do..." He doesn't tell Adam a thing about what's going to happen with the temptation; he trusted Adam to make his own choice and to follow his design. However, when Eve is getting tempted, Adam does nothing-he fails his design miserably. He goes silent, passive and thus all men have inherited that trait-to not answer the call for their masculine strength. Now, it's important to note that Adam was WITH Eve when she was being tempted. Don't believe me? Go read the text.

Free choice is one of the foundations of what makes God truly God. He could have warned Adam and Eve, he could have not offered them free choice, he could be a dictator...but he didn't, and he's not. If you choose God it will be out of a genuine love for Him, and THAT is what he wants-a true and deep relationship with each of his creations.

For those of you wanting to see the text Tim is talking about, here it is from the NIV:

"When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it."--Genesis 3:6

Check it out in other versions.

Some have thought that when it said her husband was "with her" it meant relationally, not that he was present with her at the time. I may say of my date that she's with me when she is not physically near me at all.

Regardless, Adam still failed signally in the whole ordeal. It seems Adam could have put his love for the girl too high and it overcame his devotion to God. If so then men could also have inherited a tendency to do rash dumb things on account of girls wouldn't you say?
