Angry With God

Answer me when I call to you, O my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; be merciful to me and hear my prayer."--Psalm 4:1

Have you ever felt as if God was ignoring you, not listening, giving you the silent treatment? Have you ever felt this way especially when you need Him close to you? Well fear not, you're not the only one who has experienced this.

David wrote many Psalms, and this is one. He is calling out to God to answer him, to relief him from his distress, to be merciful to him. Does this sound like someone who doesn't feel as if he is ignored by God? Of course not. David is feeling ignored by God. But notice what he is doing. He is telling God to answer Him, almost to the point of commanding God. Could David be angry with God?

Have you ever been angry with God? I sure have. There have been many times where I have been angry with God. I have heard many people say that we shouldn't be angry with God, that we need to always be happy, or pretend to be happy, even if we are angry with God. You know what I say to that? No way!

Alright, follow my logic here. God wants us to talk with Him all the time, He wants to be in constant communication with us. This is the purpose of prayer. If He wants to be in constant communication with us, couldn't we assume that He wants to hear about everything that is going on in our lives? So if He wants to hear everything, one would assume that He doesn't just want to listen to the happy parts of our lives, He wants to hear about the parts that we are angry with as well.

Make sense? There are stories in the Bible of people arguing with God, and God didn't destroy them, He patiently worked with them. Think of Jonah. He tried to run away from God. And yet God still loved him. Just because we are angry with God, doesn't mean we shouldn't talk with Him. Let Him know you're angry, let Him know why. And be open to a quick hit by a 2 x 4 because sometimes He will do that to let you know that He is God, and you are not.

But, God is love. We know that. He will work with you no matter what. Happy, sad, angry, mad. So if you're mad today, let God know. He wants to talk with you.

Anger with God usually stems from greed, selfishness, or some other motive that seeks personal gain.

In our "modern" society, we are so accustomed to getting what we want instantly, from food to entertainment, that when God needs us to wait, it's difficult, at best, for us to comprehend.

Especially when it comes to things we think we need or can't live without, whether that be the latest CD or techno-gadget. Before going and asking God for things that you think you need, make sure your basics are covered; food, water a place to call home, family, friends, clothes, etc.

It never hurts to evaluate your life and everything in your life that takes time and divide those things into the following categories: bad, good, great. Then, begin eliminating everything in your life but the great things. Chances are, you'll be happier, less stressed, and have more lasting and meaningful relationships. Always appreciate what the Lord has blessed you with and you will be a more optimistic person.

Also, regarding the spiritual "2x4," it does exist, and BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ASK FOR! Before you ask for something you really want in prayer, think about how it would affect your life (and be honest) if God answered your prayer.

God knows how to put you in a furnace for a while too. It'll be hot but you wont get burned. In fact it will burn off the ropes that hold you bound just like Daniel's friends.
