"In view of all this, we are making a binding agreement, putting it in writing, and our leaders, our Levites and our priests are affixing their seals to it."--Nehemiah 9:24
Let me give you some background. The children of Israel have just returned to Jerusalem from their captivity. They've rebuilt the temple, rebuilt the walls, and have started rebuilding their homes. And now Ezra starts reading the Torah, the laws and the people begin to realize why they were captured. So they confess their sins and then make their confession a binding agreement with God.
Have you ever made a binding agreement with God? I hear many stories of people making binding agreements with God. It usually goes something like this:
"Lord if you do this for me, I'll do this for You."
Sound familiar? It does to me. I've made many of those in the past.
Now there is nothing wrong with making this agreement with God. However, it's easy for us as humans to forget this verbal binding agreement that we have with God. In all other aspects of life a binding agreement is usually through a written contract and so if a person fails to uphold their end, consequences occur. However, with this verbal binding agreement with God, it's easy for us to not to hold up our end.
God only expects us to love and honor Him. He doesn't demand that we do things for Him. But I think that when we make a binding agreement with Him, we should honor it. And I think that everyone who calls themselves a Christian has made that binding agreement. "Whoa, did he actually say that?" Yes, I actually said that.
Think about it, once you accept Christ, you accept His death for your sins. You owe Him everything. He took upon Himself that which we deserved, death. Once you accepted Christ you took on this binding agreement between the two of you that you would believe in Him and do your best to honor Him and make Him happy.
If you've forgotten your agreement with God, I encourage you to recommit yourself to Him today. God is always there, always listening, always concerned. He's ready and waiting to shower you with blessings and love.
