Who Has Your Heart?

"Away from me Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the LORD your God, and serve Him only.'" -- Matthew 4:10

There is a battle going on all around us. Do you see it? There are two sides fighting for your heart. God and Satan are both fighting for your heart and are working as hard as they can to claim victory over your heart. So who has your heart?

Why are they battling for your heart? Why is our heart so important to them? In ancient times the heart was considered the seat of the human mind, where our thought processes come from. Sound silly? Think about it for a little bit. What does your heart do when you are afraid, in love, angry, sad? What does it feel like down there when you feel those emotions?

You feel something happen in that part of your body when you experience these emotions. Even though we know today that the heart is just a muscle that pumps blood through our bodies, we still use it as a symbol of emotion, as the center of our being. What your heart desires is what you wish to attain. If you desire love, you will try to attain love. If you desire wealth, you will try to attain wealth.

If you have ever read or watched The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, think about the scene where Edmond first meets the witch in his first visit to Narnia. What does his heart (or stomach) desire most in that scene? Turkish Delight. The "queen" bribes him to turn in himself and his siblings to her by saying "I have rooms full of Turkish Delight." When Edmond asks if he could have some more, she responds harshly, showing her true nature.

Whatever we desire is what we will try to attain. Do you desire God? Jesus desires you. He desired you so much that He came down to this Earth to die just for you. He gave up glory, majesty, and kingship to become a human, and to take on the penalty of sin for us. Jesus desires you, and wants you to desire Him. Does He have your heart?

It's all so true. I'm reminded of "The Matrix," where the world we are living in is really the fake world; the real world is fraught with battle between the forces of good and evil. How differently would we live our lives if we viewed our world within this context?
